On Wednesday, the 33-year-old mother of four posted a lengthy statement to her social media accounts, accusing Vardy of selling her out by leaking her private Instagram posts to tabloids. She says multiple people have been given access to her Instagram account over the years, and implies one of them probably did it.

And so Wayne Rooney's wife chose to do something about it, mounting a five-month social-media sting operation in which she blocked all but one suspect from viewing her personal Instagram stories and then populated them with fake news items to see if they made it into the Sun.

Rooney claims that information about her, her family and her friends has been given to the newspaper without her permission, and when she eventually was fed up with all of it, she came up with the idea to zero in on whoever it was coming from.

She had reportedly long held suspicions over who the culprit may be but undertook a long process to back up her thoughts.

Social media users on both sides of the Atlantic have quickly become obsessed with the story, but the best response by far came from Netflix's United Kingdom and Ireland Twitter account.

She linked the account of fellow Wag Rebekah Vardy to the leak, after she successfully blocked all accounts, except one, from viewing her stories.

Coleen Rooney in a Twitter rant accused Rebekah Vardy of leaking information from her personal Instagram account - including her Instagram stories - to The Sun newspaper for years.

Rooney said that the false details she shared included her a story on her researching "gender selection" treatment in Mexico, another on her considering a return to TV hosting, and one about something as mundane as the basement in her home flooding.

"I'm not commenting. I'm keeping a dignified silence but I will tell you, IT'S SO [expletive] HARD!"

Coleen Rooney claimed that following a process of elimination, she found a link to Vardy's Instagram account.

Coleen Rooney claimed that, following a process of elimination, she discovered it was Rebekah Vardy's account.

"I liked you a lot Coleen & I'm upset you have chosen to do this, especially when I'm heavily pregnant".

Vardy said that she did not "need the money" and had nothing to gain from selling any stories to the newspapers.

Many now want Rooney to start her own investigation business.

Now, it has emerged the methods Rooney employed were suggested to her some months ago.

Jamie Vardy (L) and Wayne Rooney (R) in action for England in 2016.

This has to be one of the best ways I've seen to out a snitch, and it was done thanks to Instagram Stories. I'm pregnant & on holiday & am at a loss to why she would do this. I never speak to anyone about you as various journalists who have asked me over the years can vouch for.

"Shamed! I converse for you". "You should've called me the first time it happened". The perpetrator was Jamie Vardy's wife, Rebekah Vardy.

She said she was "disgusted" she even had to address it and others have had access to her account.
