German police say two people were killed on Wednesday in a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle.

"Early indications show that two people were killed in Halle".

German media report that shots were also fired near a synagogue in Halle, but the details have not been confirmed.

Several shots were fired and the suspected assailants then fled in a vehicle, police said in a tweet.

But a police spokesman could not confirm this to Euronews, saying it happened on a street containing both a church and a synagogue, not necessarily outside the Jewish place of worship.

Police have cordoned off the Paulus district and also warned residents in Landsberg, outside of the city, to stay in their homes.

Witnesses said that at least one of the suspects was wearing a military-style combat uniform and was armed with "multiple weapons", according to the Deutsche Welle public broadcaster.
