Mystics forward Elena Delle Donne will be awarded her second WNBA MVP on Thursday, according to ESPN's Mechelle Voepel. "It's something that, when my career is over, maybe I'll look back on it and brag to my kids or grandkids". With points tabulated for each top-five vote a player received, Delle Donne finished with 420 points, followed by Phoenix's Brittney Griner with 167, Connecticut's Jonquel Jones with 145, the Sparks' Nneka Ogwumike with 128 and Seattle's Natasha Howard with 121. But she hadn't yet heard from coach Mike Thibault, and honestly, she didn't know what to expect. After all, this is Toliver's 11th season in the WNBA, but her first time missing significant time because of an injury.

Delle Donne will reportedly receive the award on Thursday night before Washington faces Las Vegas in the league's semifinals. Delle Donne joins five others who have been named MVP a couple of times.

Delle Donne, the first Mystics player to earn the honor, averaged 19.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists this season. Her turnaround fadeaway shot with 32.9 seconds left ended up being the winning basket.

"I am extremely proud of this honor", Delle Donne said. She also played with that injury in helping the US team win the World Cup a year ago shortly after the WNBA Finals.

Thibault credits Delle Donne for the work she has done to get stronger since coming to the Mystics and said it's one of the things that has elevated her play on defense. "But we still have work ahead of us and we're all focused playing our hardest to bring a championship to Washington".
