The family of a doctor who operated a clinic in IN sifted through his personal belongings after his death and found 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains, authorities said.

Klopfer, who died September 3, was a longtime doctor at an abortion clinic in South Bend, Indiana.

Sheriff's detectives, Crime Scene Investigators and representatives from the coroner's office arrived at the address and took possession of the remains. The remains were found Thursday at his home in Will County, Illinois, about 45 miles from Chicago, local media said.

Klopfer formerly worked at the Women's Pavilion in South Bend, Ind., the report said.

A lawyer for his family contacted the authorities after they discovered fetal remains on the property of Ulrich George Klopfer. The home where the remains were found is located in Will County, Ill.

Klopfer's medical license was suspended in 2015 after he was found to have neglected to report an abortion he had performed on a thirteen-year-old in 2012.

Will County authorities are now reportedly conducting an investigation into the matter, adding that Klopfer's family is in full cooperation.
