Valencia manager Marcelino has been officially sacked from his post at Mestalla with Albert Celades expected to be named as his replacement imminently.

The departure had been mooted in what turned out to be a tumultuous pre-season for the club, with local media reporting the coach was not happy with owner Peter Lim over transfer policy.

His position came under threat 12 months ago during a hard start to 2018-19, but the club kept faith in the former Villarreal boss and were rewarded when they ended the season by winning the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona and clinching a Champions League spot.

Valencia has fired coach Marcelino Garcia Toral three games into the Spanish league season.

Former Barcelona midfielder Celades, 43, joins until June 2021 and took his first training session on Wednesday.

'The club would like to thank him for his work and dedication during his time at our entity and wish him success for the future'.

Valencia CF made the appointment of Celades official just over an hour after sacking Marcelino.

In his two seasons with the club, Marcelino led Valencia to fourth place and qualification for the Champions League.

At present it appears that Lim's decision does not impact on sporting director Mateu Alemany and at present numerous Valencia CF players are supposed to be in a state of shock regarding Lim's decision.
