Iraq stampede kills 31 at Ashura commemorations in Karbala

Ashura, the 10th day of the lunar month of Muharram, falls on Tuesday in Iran this year.

Meanwhile, in Lahore, main Shabeeh e Zuljinah procession of 10th Muharram-ul-Haram was taken out from Nisar Haveli inside Mochi Gate of Old Walled City near midnight last night.

Meanwhile, the devotees Monday brought main processions from Imambargahs across the country to observe 9th of Muharram with religious fervour and sanctity to pay tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in Karbala.

Muslims consider the month of Muharram one of the year's holiest months, as many landmark events in Islamic history took place in Muharram.

Hussain's army was considered of friends, families including women and children against thousand of a heavily armed enemy. It is said that at the end of the battle, the Hussain and his group was captured and tortured. They were captured and deprived of food and water in a desert. Majalis-e-Sham-e-Ghariban will be held on Tuesday evening, to pay homage to the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala.

Sunni Muslims may mark the day by fasting, which follows the traditions of Judaism. This month of Muharram is extremely sacred for the Muslim community. On this, as part of the Mourning of Muharram, Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims practice faqa (partial fasting) on Ashura.

Muharram processions routes were sealed and the movement of unwanted people was restricted.

Ashura is the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. People don black clothes, observes fasts and flagellate themselves with sharp objects on Muharram.

The Muharram ceremonies symbolize the eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity's struggle against injustice, tyranny and oppression, the cause for which Imam Hussein (PBUH) was martyred.

In Peshawar, the main procession of "Alem and Zuljinah" of the 9th Muharram was taken out of Imambargah Hussainia Hall in a peaceful manner amid tight security arrangement by law enforcement agencies.
