The United States lost to France, 89-79, in the quarterfinals of the 2019 FIBA World Cup on Wednesday, snapping a streak of 58 straight wins in global competition.

France trailed by three heading into the fourth quarter, but they outscored the Americans 26-13 in the final frame en route to an 89-79 win.

The top American players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry opted not to play in the tournament, while Jayson Tatum and Kyle Kuzma were injured while the team played warmup games ahead of the Tokyo tournament. Donovan Mitchell led all scorers with 29, but there wasn't enough offensive output from the rest of the squad to hang with France late in the game.

Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert were two of the best National Basketball Association players on the court Wednesday night, and because of it the Americans' defense of their consecutive World Cup championships is over. Jazz center Ruby Gobert had a double-double for France (21 points, 16 rebounds), and Orlando Magic guard Evan Fournier added 22 points and four assists of his own.
