Cristiano Ronaldo took one giant step closer to the men's all-time global goal record by scoring four more for Portugal in a 5-1 rout of Lithuania in Euro 2020 qualifying on Tuesday. Portugal has eight points from four qualifiers, overcoming two early draws to sit in second place in Group B with eight points-and with a game in hand-behind Ukraine, which has 13 points through five games.

The four goals also took Ronaldo's tally with Portugal to eight in 2019, with two more global breaks upon us in October and November.

Serbia moved up into third place in the group with a 3-1 win at Luxembourg, with Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring twice.

He opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a typical finish from the penalty spot, and then scored three goals in the space of 15 minutes to make it 4-1.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said: "Ronaldo is the best player in the world, this is clear and unmistakable proof".

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has a lot to thank Cristiano Ronaldo for and the Portuguese veteran continues to make history, with the statistics behind his worldwide career now scarcely believable. "It suits me to continue helping the national team", Ronaldo said.

The hosts equalized with a header by Vytautas Andriuskevicius from a corner kick in the 28th, with the ball hitting the post before going in.

Carvalho's goal, his fourth in 60 games, was a fitting reward for a player who keeps the Portugal midfield ticking over without getting much attention. The Fulham striker headed the visitors in front after 36 minutes and Nemanja Radonjic curled in the second 10 minutes after the restart.
