Joel Matip's contract extension at Liverpool is richly deserved, following a pleasing turnaround in fortunes.

The 28-year-old centre half had joined Liverpool on a free transfer from German side Schalke in 2016 and was originally handed a four-year contract.

As a result the services of the former Cameroon global, who has started the season in fine form, have been retained until the summer of 2021.

Sporting Director Michael Edwards has already tied down Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson, Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi to new deals over the last 18 months.

Milner, who arrived at the Premier League club in the summer of 2015, and has enjoyed regular game time under Jurgen Klopp, even being deployed as a left-back when needed.

This season, Milner started against Southampton, while he was a sub against Arsenal.

While he is able to sign a pre-contract with a non-English club in January, Milner's representative is said to have approached Liverpool during the summer to find out if they wish to extend his contract.

The Athletic understands that... preliminary talks have taken place with Liverpool about a potential extension (to Milner's contract) and more dialogue is set to follow.

The Cameroonian has had a year added to his current Reds deal, according to The Athletic's James Pearce.
