Duke is tied with Johns Hopkins at 10th place in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings, a fall from its position at No. 8 past year.

"We are thrilled to once again be ranked the nation's top public university, particularly as we celebrate our first 100 years", Chancellor Gene Block said.

"The University of SC offers students an experience unmatched by any other institution in the country".

This is UCLA's third year atop the public university rankings.

To rank colleges, U.S. News & World Report grouped schools into categories based on academic missions, then scored the schools based on outcomes (graduation, retention and social mobility), faculty resources (class size, faculty salary), expert opinion (peer assessments), financial resources and student excellence, according to its explanation of methodology.

Last year, U.S. News introduced a social mobility factor to its main rankings, but they didn't change much.

Cornell was also listed as one of the top 50 liberal arts colleges, taking the #33 spot, in Washington Monthly's annual rankings.

The rankings compare colleges based on ACT/SAT Scores, student-faculty ratios, tuition and several other areas.

In addition, UF's undergraduate business programs saw a significant rise from No. 30 last year to No. 22 this year. The University of South Carolina Upstate ranked No. 1 for best public Southern regional college and No. 1 among public Southern regional colleges for Top Performers on Social Mobility. The national universities category comprises 381 institutions (208 public, 172 private and 1 proprietary) that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral degrees.

And the study overseas category highlights universities that allow students to complete a substantial amount of credit hours outside the USA, while also immersing themselves in new cultures.

In the "National Liberal Arts Category", Oberlin College ranked No. 33 with the The College of Wooster trailing behind at No. 66.

"While no one wants to highlight a fall in the rankings, it's important for you and all of our constituents to understand that we have a plan for addressing this slide", he said. Following the two Ivy League giants are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale and Columbia all tied for third.

It was also included on two specialty rankings lists: "Most Innovative Schools" and "Best Value Schools".

In May, seven years after Trachtenberg wrote his piece, it was revealed that the University of Oklahoma gave "inflated" data on its alumni giving rates for twenty years, in an effort to improve their ranking.
