Luis Enrique's daughter Xana passes away after cancer battle

Former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has paid tribute to his daughter after she died from bone cancer aged nine.

Enrique, 49, confirmed his daughter Xana's death on Thursday afternoon, saying she had fought osteosarcoma - or bone cancer - for "five intense months".

"We give thanks for all the shows of affection we've received during these months and we're grateful for the discretion and understanding".

"We also thank the staff, doctors, nurses, and the volunteers at the Sant Joan de Deu and Sant Pau hospitals for their dedication and care".

"We will miss you a lot but we will remember you every day of our lives with the hope that one day in the future we will meet again".

Prominent figures in football were quick to send Enrique their condolences, with his former Spain captain Sergio Ramos posting on Twitter: "All our support and love for you and your family".

An outpouring of support has followed for the coach and his family, from players, clubs as well as many outside the sport.

Watford striker Gerard Deulofeu, a product of the Barcelona youth academy, added: "Rest in peace Xana".

Spain and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea said he was "speechless", while Spanish tennis champion Rafael Nadal said he "cannot imagine the pain of the family". RIP Xana." Lionel Messi, who plays for the world-class football club, issued a statement of his own, saying: "We are with you, all the strength of the world", and tennis player Rafael Nadal wrote: "I have just found out the awful news of the passing of Xana.

Barcelona's rivals Real Madrid said they "join the pain" of Enrique and his family and "want to convey their deepest condolences to them at these hard times".
