Andrew Luck Backup: Who Will Start for Colts at Quarterback?

It looks like the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback carousel has stopped for the time being, per a tweet from The Athletic's Colts insider Zak Keefer. "It's taken the joy out of this game....the only way forward for me is to remove myself from football".

Coach Frank Reich had said he hoped to have an answer about Luck's availability for the September 8 season opener after the third preseason game. Lingering pain forced him back to the sideline and the Colts later determined that he had an injury near the back of his left ankle. He hadn't practiced with the team since, though he did throw passes in pregame warmups before last week's preseason game.

The injuries to regular starter Andrew Luck have hung over the Colts for the past two weeks, with the exact nature seeming to shift by the hour. "And I wanted to make sure I could go out and enjoy it".

"I've been stuck in this process", Luck said. "This is not an easy decision". Not wanting to re-live the 2016 season - one in which he played through vast pain in his shoulder - Luck said he came to the conclusion that it was time to step away from the game. But it is the right decision for me.

National Football League fans, commentators, coaches - everyone was having a hard time processing the news of Luck's retirement, and there was a large of amount of love/hate reactions to Brissett taking over the leading role. Luck did not play that season because he was recovering from surgery on his throwing shoulder.

"It hurt" to be booed, Luck said.

Luck, who turns 30 on September 12, is a four-time Pro Bowler. This might not have been the one he wanted - and certainly didn't expect.

"It's hard to put into words the emotions you feel, and thankfully Chris and I and Mr. Irsay have had some time to digest this - and it's been hard to digest", Reich added.
