Police make arrests as right-wing, anti-fascist groups rally in Portland

Proud Boys - which The Southern Poverty Law Center, a major USA civil rights organisation, has classified as a hate group - has been involved in previous far-right rallies, and violent street clashes, in Portland.

Antifa supporters sat down and blocked streets as right-wing groups approached. A group of Antifa protestors were screaming at police, with one guy even telling offers to "commit suicide".

Police warned the media to stop posting locations of various groups because they believed protesters were using the information to target opposing groups. Instead, the PPB allowed the Proud Boys to march east over the Hawthorne Bridge, which until that point had been completely closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The far-right event on Saturday was organised by the "Proud Boys", a group the Southern Poverty Law Center designated as a hate group.

Police said they had seized the weapons, including shields, from multiple groups as they assembled along the Willamette River, which runs through the city.

In recent years, Portland has become a magnet for protests, some of them turning ugly. Then, right-wing writer Andy Ngo had milkshakes thrown at him and was punched by counter-protesters.

President Donald Trump had tweeted that the city was "being watched very carefully".

"Look at President Trump's Twitter", Joe Biggs said in a tweet referring to Trump's tweet that major consideration was being given to naming Antifa an "organization of terror". "Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job!".
