Just a month after reports surfaced that One Direction singer Harry Styles was in talks to play Prince Eric in Disney's live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, the singer has turned down the role. Styles took a couple weeks to think it over, but ultimately, he was unable to reach a deal, and politely passed on the Disney project.

Two major movie chains, Regal Cinemas and AMC Cinemas, both incorrectly tweeted on Tuesday that Styles had been cast as Prince Eric, but both tweets were deleted shortly thereafter. Javier Bardem recently joined the cast that also includes Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Ariel's best friend who is a fish; Awkwafina as Scuttle, the seagull friend of the princess; and Melissa McCarthy, who will play the role of the vile Ursula. Harry Styles' The Little Mermaid Prince Eric casting has been revealed, so fans everywhere can rejoice!

Behind the camera, Rob Marshall, director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Mary Poppins Returns, is helming The Little Mermaid, and David Magee, who wrote Mary Poppins Returns, penned the latest draft of the script. Kingsman co-writer Jane Goldman wrote an earlier draft. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca.

Alan Menken is remastering his original "The Little Mermaid" score for the film and is writing a song with Moana composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In early July, it was reported that Styles was in "early talks" to play Prince Eric, but that nothing had been made official yet.

Disney's animated The Little Mermaid made over $211 million at the box office and became a bestseller on home video, popularizing songs like "Under The Sea" and "Part of Your World".
