Snap Launches Spectacles 3, Coming This Fall for $380

The stainless steel Spectacles 3 will retail for $380 and feature a futuristic design that comes in black and rose gold.

"Spectacles 3 are equipped with two HD cameras to capture Snaps in 3D and transform them with 3D Effects, inspiring creativity like never before", SnapChat says.

Spectacles 3, which will begin shipping in the fall, will cost $380, nearly twice the $200 cost of the previous version.

Samsung has pretty much abandoned the low-priced Gear VR lineup, Google's Daydream platform isn't doing a lot better either, while higher-end headsets are yet to yield the tiniest of profits for HTC, but none of that is stopping Snap from betting big on another stylish pair of smartglasses.

Snap has not had much success with Spectacles thus far. The company sold more than 200,000 pairs of the original version, which debuted in 2016. But Snap overestimated demand and had to write down nearly $40 million in inventory in late 2017. Unfortunately, the Spectacles 3 are even pricier than predicted a year ago, fetching a whopping $380, compared to $130 for the first generation and $150 as far as 2018's sequel was concerned. It's only a "limited edition" product, so Snap isn't investing a lot on it yet.

Snap should focus on earning more money from its content, and could potentially make investments in music, "a natural thing for people to share" on social media, said Jim McVeigh, founder of Cyndx, an investment search platform that connects companies with firms seeking to be acquired or to raise capital.
