Chelsea FC were not able to sign any new players in the summer transfer window due to their ban from Federation Internationale de Football Association, although they did tie up pre-arranged deals for Christian Pulisic and Mateo Kovacic. "It would have been wonderful for him to be here today, but he's not, and I dedicate that goal to him".

Pietersen is a known Chelsea fan and has been witnessed cheering for the Premier League club at various occasions both online and from the ground.

Cesar Azpilicueta admits Chelsea must improve as they prepare to face Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

"People talk about the lad at Liverpool [Alexander-Arnold] but he can't defend like Wan Bissaka, whose defending and positioning is very good".

"And every time he won a tackle [against Chelsea] there was no doubt he won it cleanly".

Former Stamford Bridge boss Mourinho, speaking in his role as a pundit for Sky Sports, questioned the wisdom of including Portsmouth-born Mount and Abraham in the starting XI as Frank Lampard's tenure as Chelsea head coach began in ignominious fashion.

Man Utd kept only two clean sheets at home in the Premier League last season and conceded 54 goals in the campaign, but started the season the best possible way.

Lampard himself was actually playing for West Ham the last time that Chelsea were stationed in the drop zone, not completing his move to Stamford Bridge until July 2001.

"We want to win a trophy and we need to give everything". I thrive on that.
