"By testing birds from key areas in the state, we hope to learn the extent to which ruffed grouse are being exposed to West Nile virus, and how it may be affecting them", said laboratory technician Julie Melotti from the Michigan DNR Wildlife Disease Lab. It says the species of mosquito that is most likely to carry the virus, becomes more active in August.

The risk of becoming seriously ill from West Nile virus infection is low for most people; however, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are more at risk.

The West Nile virus can occasionally cause severe disease or even death. It was first detected in the South Okanagan during the summer of 2009.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water. It doesn't take much time or water for mosquitoes to develop from eggs into adults.

Stagnant backyard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and should be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth. There were no EEE virus positive mosquito samples identified in Westborough in 2018.

Install or Repair Screens - Some mosquitoes like to come indoors.

Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn. Although it may be hard to do when it's hot, wearing long-sleeves, long trousers and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

"If you're in an area with lots of mosquitos, wear loose-fitting, light-coloured full length trousers and a long-sleeved shirt", said Feist. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label.
