Arsenal have signed Brazilian centre back David Luiz from London rivals Chelsea, the Premier League clubs said yesterday.

The 27-year-old defender has attracted interest from several clubs and, despite the transfer window remaining open in Europe for nearly another full month, could move today.

Blues manager Frank Lampard doesn't want players that aren't committed, so in the long run a move should help the squad and it opens the door for others.

Brazil global Luiz, who also won the Europa League (2013, 2019), spent two years at Paris St-Germain where he played under Arsenal manager Unai Emery after joining the French club in 2014 before returning to Stamford Bridge.

The club is current facing a transfer embargo, so it couldn't add anyone this summer or during the January 2020 transfer window. Chelsea was found to have been, "in breach of regulations relating to global transfer and registration of players under the age of 18".

Chelsea are prevented from signing a replacement as they are now serving a transfer ban that allows players to leave but prevents any incoming deals. But over the last 48 hours, Arsenal apparently showed interest in Luiz and Chelsea opted to move him.

However, in a very interesting development on Wednesday, Chelsea defender David Luiz has emerged as a surprise target for Unai Emery, and it is now being reported by the ever-reliable David Ornstein that the two London clubs have now reached an agreement.
