Boardmasters festival has been cancelled, just hours before gates were set to be opened, following severe weather warnings.

However, with high winds expected at the festival's site in Newquay, organisers have made the hard decision of cancelling the entire event.

In a statement, the festival said the decision to cancel was made after speaking with police and independent safety advisers.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Met Office issued a yellow severe weather warning for wind on Saturday, plus another warning for rain and thunderstorms on Friday.

Boardmasters festival-goers will get a full refund for their tickets after the event was cancelled on Tuesday night, organisers have confirmed.

Festival organisers apologised for disruption to local businesses, and advised ticketholders to follow the festival's social media feeds for information about refunds.

Bus company Megabus said on Twitter it would be making extra seats available on its Newquay to London service for passengers affected by the cancellation.

Boardmasters, a live music and surfing festival, usually takes place every year in and around Newquay.

Other acts who had been set to perform at the festival site in Watergate Bay included Razorlight, Dizzee Rascal and Jorja Smith.
