Tensions between mainstream media and supporters of President Donald Trump threatened to spill over into violence at the White House Rose Garden, as a former Trump adviser and a CNN journalist nearly came to blows.

In response, Sebastian Gorka, a former White House aide, shouts: "You are a journalist, right?" The pundit replies by addressing the group of conservative influencers who had gathered for Trump's social media summit and were invited to stay for his ensuing address about how he plans to determine the citizenship of US residents.

"We can go outside and have a long conversation", he threatened. "You're a punk!" Gorka yelled in Karem's face.

One person from the crowd tells Karem, "Just for the record, he'd kick your punk [expletive]".

But in CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta's incomplete summary of events, the blow-up - started by Karem, as video evidence shows - was an example of Trump's "social media allies" "verbally abus [ing] reporters who were trying to do their jobs". Karem said as Gorka walked away.

Project Veritas head James O'Keefe was also seen telling Karem, "I'm on the same team as you". We're both journalists. We're both investigative reporters.

"When you have a staff of people that verify your facts, then you can call yourself a reporter", he said in what seemed to be an attempt to puff up his status as a "real" journalist. "You have an opinion".

"You should label yourself as an opinion", Villa shot back.

Breitbart's Kyle Morris responded by providing another angle of the incident: "Sounds as if Brian Karem was only in attendance to berate Trump supporters", wrote Morris.

"You're threatening me now in the White House - in the Rose Garden, threatening me in the Rose Garden", Gorka said, approaching Karem. "These people are not journalists".

"They're punks and political saboteurs", he added.

Before announcing his executive order, Trump hosted the right-wing influencers at a social media summit at the White House before the presser.

Gorka and Johnson were among those attending.

"WH officials invited Trump's social media allies to sit in the Rose Garden".
