Cape Town - Springbok Ruan Pienaar has signed a two-year contract with the Cheetahs and will represent the franchise in the PRO14 competition.

The legendary Springbok scrum-half is understood to have signed a two-year deal, after he ended his time with Montpellier at the end of last season following the tragic death of his sister in a auto crash back home.

Pienaar left Ulster in 2017 having made 141-appearances for the province.

Pienaar now looks set return to Kingspan next season - but this time as opposition for his former club. Ulster is special to me and my family now.

The 35-year-old started his career in Currie Cup for Sharks in 2004 with his Super Rugby debut coming a year later.

A club statement reads: "The skilful player represented the Springboks in 88 test matches".

Pienaar's first season with Montpellier was an unqualified success, scoring 193 points and helping them to the Top 14 final where they were beaten by Castres.

The Cheetahs finished sixth in Conference A last season with eight wins and a draw from 21 regular-season matches.
