After being rumored for ages, Sherlock Holmes 3 is finally moving forward as it's been confirmed that Dexter Fletcher will be directing the third installment in the Sherlock Holmes series.

Guy Ritchie directed the first two Sherlock Holmes movies which together grossed over $1 billion at the global B.O. Fletcher as actor starred in Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Sources say Warner Bros. had always planned on making a third film.

Downey Jr. and Jude Law will return to reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and his BFF/collaborator Watson, respectively. "However, Downey's busy schedule as Iron Man prevented any new filming for the series", which I don't really buy. Chris Brancato wrote the script, and Susan Downey, Joel Silver, Dan Lin and Lionel Wigram are producing.

"Sherlock Holmes 3" is slated for a December 21, 2021 release. The studio had originally announced that the film would open on Christmas Day of 2020 but pushed back the date last March. Village Roadshow is also returning as co-producer. And Fletcher isn't a stranger to replacing another filmmaker, having stepped in at the 11th hour to complete production on Bohemian Rhapsody following Bryan Singer's exit. He also directed "Rocketman" star Taron Edgerton in "Eddie the Eagle".
