New England Patriots Hall of Famer Tedy Bruschi has suffered a stroke, according to a statement released to his foundation by his family. "He recognized the warning signs immediately: arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties". But the linebacker surprised everyone when he announced he would return to play in the middle of October that year, having been medically cleared by doctors and the Patriots to join the team. "Tedy and his family thank your for your ongoing encouragement, and kindly ask for privacy at this time".

Bruschi would later announce his plan to sit out the 2005 National Football League season. "And I'm very proud of that".

"My neurologist put his hand on my shoulder and said I've had a stroke", Bruschi told the Boston Globe in April in a feature about running the Boston Marathon to raise stroke awareness.

Bruschi, now 46, played for the Patriots his entire career, winning three Super Bowls before retiring after the 2008 season.

"Tedy has the complete support of ESPN and we wish him a speedy recovery", the network said in a statement.
