Prince William and wife Kate announce official visit to Pakistan in Autumn

While this is a first visit for William and Kate, it is not the first official visit to Pakistan for British royals.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will undertake an official visit to Pakistan at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office", a statement from the palace read.

Further details will be provided in due course, their office said.

Many Western countries continue to have travel warnings in place, warning their citizens about kidnappings and bomb attacks - particularly near the restive Afghan border.

He said upcoming royal visit reflects the importance United Kingdom attaches to Pakistan.

Prince of Wales Charles and his wife Duchess of Cornwall Camilla had visited Pakistan in 2006.

"The people of Pakistan still cherish and fondly recall the visits of Her Majesty The Queen to Pakistan during 1961 and 1997", he said. The two countries also have strong trade links, with U.K. -Pakistan bilateral trade in 2017 valued at £2.9 billion, or roughly $3.7 billion.

But Pakistan still vividly remembers the late Princess Diana's visit in 1996.

The Queen last travelled to Pakistan in 1997, and called on Pakistan and India to settle their differences, in an address to parliament in Islamabad.

Britain is home to more than a million people of Pakistani origin, making it the largest Pakistani diaspora in Europe.
