The Lakers have believed for weeks - even before they acquired Anthony Davis - that they would factor into the Kawhi Leonard chase.

Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri holds up the Larry O'Brien championship trophy during a rally at Toronto city hall Nathan Phillips Square.

The long waiting game on his future will soon come to an end.

In the Sports Illustrated article, Lowry talks about the trades he has been a part of, landing in Toronto and losing his best friend and teammate DeMar DeRozan in the trade for Leonard.

"I think it was Maya Angelou who said 'When you know better, you do better, '" he said.

Butler now is in the middle of rumors linking him to a sign-and-trade to the Houston Rockets, while the Philadelphia 76ers have expressed interest in trying to re-sign the free agent forward. Teams have a ton of money to spend overall.

Getty Kawhi Leonard of the Toronto Raptors speaks with the media following his teams victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Kawhi Leonard is keeping his options open in Los Angeles. I said this to you guys: We have to be ourselves. The Toronto crowd wants him to stay and for up to five years more if possible. "And I think (Denver's) Tim Connelly was right there with him, that's my opinion".

"Hopefully I'll get a max contract anywhere I choose to go", Butler told reporters about his free agency last month. Ujiri revealed that the two shared a sort of conciliatory moment when the Spurs and Raptors met during the season.

Maybe Leonard has no interest in completing a Lakers' Big 3. But he proved to be a great fit and showed he was a big-time playoff performer.

By his own admission, Masai Ujiri was dripping a different kind of sweat when he met with the media on Tuesday than the sort saturating his forehead when he sat in front of them nearly one year ago. "I respect authority, and I'll wait until that happens", he said. "DeMar came into our locker room". "I love it here, my family loves it here, my wife loves it here".

The communication with Lowry, meanwhile, had its low points. However, the Raptors have great options either way that will benefit them in the short term or the long term depending on the direction Masai Ujiri decides to take the franchise past the 2019 National Basketball Association offseason.

"For me it's always been about Toronto", he said. "But we resolved it".

The team used a "load management" system to build Leonard up over the campaign.

It also helps that the Eastern Conference can drastically change with free agency, which means we could see teams like the Boston Celtics drop out of title contention.

Leonard would simply take over some games, leaving opposing defences befuddled.

It would be hard for Toronto to make a stronger pitch for Leonard's return. (BMTI), hoping to urge Leonard to extend his contact with the Raptors. Steady victories kept everyone's spirits high. The 2019 Finals MVP also is seriously considering re-signing with the Raptors, sources said. Or was he merely squeezing in a sightseeing tour before leaving Toronto for good? "I think he saw that".

In addition, Lowry and Serge Ibaka are both entering the final season of their lucrative three-year contracts. "It's insane what we represent here and it's something that we're proud of, we're really really proud of because it's something that identifies with what Toronto is, diversity", Ujiri said. "I will reach out to them eventually and I know our organization has already".
