Alexander grabbed her iPhone, scooped up the family and set off in search of her missing daughter.

She chose to use the iPhone app Find My Friends to try to figure out Macy's whereabouts and drove to the location shown on her phone, but when she arrived to the location in the app Macy was nowhere to be seen. "I can't explain watching the Global Positioning System on my phone with my dot for my phone getting close to hers and then suddenly seeing the tire tracks", Macy's mom said later.

Smith's mother gives God the credit for helping her find her daughter and said, "She won't have any feeling on her left arm for a while, but she knows it could've been much worse".

A North Carolina teen is spreading awareness about the benefits of phone-tracking apps, which she says helped save her life following a vehicle crash in Surry County last weekend.

She believes she was spared for a reason and wants to encourage teens to use the location apps to share their location with family members.

When 17-year-old Macy Smith was late coming home and didn't answer her phone, her mother knew something was wrong.

The teen suffered a fractured neck and severe nerve damage in her arm.

While many comments on Smith's Facebook post praise the app and Alexander's quick thinking, one person mentioned that these types of accidents need to be prevented and urged people to reach out to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. "This is the 7th wreck in this same area that I am aware of", the comment reads.

She underwent surgery to relieve the swelling and pressure in the limb, and though she now has no feeling in her arm and hand, she shared a hopeful video showing her lightly moving her fingers despite previous fears she may lose them.

Macy Smith, Catrina Alexander, representatives from NCDOT and officials from the Surry County Police Department did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle's requests for comment.
