School Staffer Disarms Gunman Outside Portland High School

A person spotted with a gun near Parkrose High School is in custody after the school's football coach, former University of OR football player Keanon Lowe, tackled him and wrestled him to the ground, Portland police said. Lowe was a wide receiver for the Ducks between 2011 and 2014.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reported Friday that Lowe - who is now a coach at Parkrose High School - has left an interview with police and says he is exhausted, but happy he could be there for the students and community.

A Portland, Oregon high school has been cleared by police after a male armed with a gun was subdued by a staff member near the school's tennis courts. Lowe averaged almost 15 yards a catch in 2014, the year OR went to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game and lost to Ohio State. Yakots, the police spokesman, said a firearm was recovered at the scene.

About 10 minutes before the end of class, the student appeared in the doorway in a black trench coat and pulled out a long gun from beneath his coat, senior Justyn Wilcox, who also was in the room, told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

The spokesman declined to say whether the suspect is a student.

Police have not yet released details about the suspect's intentions or the weapon. Police noted, "There is no indication there is any other shooter or any injuries". Investigators were still working to determine if any shots were fired during the incident. Officers and members of the SERT team were conducting a search of the area, and the investigation remained underway. Police notified parents that they could meet and pick up students at the K-Mart on Northeast 122nd and Sandy.

Portland PD tweeted, "Suspect in custody".

Lowe, a stand-out football player at Jesuit High School in Portland and then at University of OR in Eugene, is a football and track coach at Parkrose High School.
