European Union negotiator Guy Verhofstadt joins Lib Dems on campaign trail

The EU parliament's chief Brexit representative Guy Verhofstadt played TinTin to Vince Cable's Snowy and the result was (whisper it) liberal centrist catnip.

The Liberal Democrats, who are running on a "Bollocks to Brexit" mandate, made considerable gains in United Kingdom local elections last week and are seen as an antithesis to Nigel Farage's Brexit Party.

Verhofstadt will be knocking on doors in an affluent area of North London to tell people that Brexit should be cancelled - alongside Vince Cable and his Liberal Democrat MEP candidates.

"I think it's important to show that the European liberals and democrats support Vince Cable", he said, telling people to support the Lib Dems.

"Support the Lib Dems in this hard fight in Britain, in these European elections".

"We want to show by coming here a message to the continent to say "never repeat Brexit again".

"We want to be the alternative for nationalism and popularism".

'What I think is there will be a huge support for Remain.

Sir Vince said he was campaigning to combat "ugly populism".

In short, it was the ideal Liberal Democrat launch.

Mr Verhofstadt tweeted earlier this morning that it was time to "renew Europe". "Europe, it's all Europe".

He said: "Nobody now seriously disputes the economic and the businesses arguments - even the defenders of Brexit acknowledge that if we leave the European Union we'll be worse off".
