The current outbreak of the virus, which causes severe vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding, is the second largest in history behind the 2013-16 West African epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people. I am also profoundly anxious about the situation.

The assailants have mostly been unidentified but are believed to comprise both local militiamen and community members who oppose the response efforts.

"My pride and respect for my extraordinary colleagues has only grown", said Dr Moeti.

Dr. Moeti underlined that colleagues have been through something "unimaginable and yet they were willing to continue the vital work".

The group met with Butembo's mayor, US Ambassador Michael Hammer, a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) representative, and other partners, as well as local business, religious, and political leaders. "In the end, it is only through ownership by all the affected communities that the outbreak will end". Tedros said the response requires major shifts.

They urged the global community to step up support to contain the Ebola outbreak, including filling the funding gap that threatens to stymie the Ebola response.

Only half of the now requested funds have been received, which could lead to World Health Organization and partners rolling back some activities precisely when they are most needed.

A senior World Health Organisation official was also killed by militiamen ten days ago, according to Reuters. Also, four other locations each reported a single case: Mabalako, Beni, Kayna, and Kalunguta.

Ministry of Health (MOH) has reported 1466 confirmed and probable EVD cases and 957 deaths, with 891 in confirmed cases since the outbreak began past year.

It's the first time since the new Ebola outbreak this figure has been reached, the Congolese ministry added. It will meet weekly or more often, as needed.

Also today, worldwide partners working on Ebola preparedness and response began a 2-day meeting in Kampala, Uganda's capital, to discuss key risk factors and response challenges and to suggest new solutions. Fortunately to date, geographic spread is still limited to two provinces and there is no spread to neighboring countries. At the end of the meeting, the group will develop a joint preparedness roadmap.
