Southampton look set to be without defender Jannik Vestergaard for the trip to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon, according to the club's official website.

The Spanish tactician was undertaking press conference duties for the day and was asked about how the Englishman is doing.

Longstaff sustained knee ligament damage against West Ham United last month, and the expectation was that he would miss the remainder of the season.

It will give hope to fans that he might be seen again before the season is out, although the Magpies medical team will not want to rush him, especially once Premier League safety is secured.

"That was my idea in the first year, so OK, we can not now, but we will try".

"Yesterday I was talking with a friend - 11 years", the 59-year-old Benitez said.

The two teams played out a 0-0 stalemate at St Mary's in October but Newcastle boss Benitez is targeting three points this weekend.

"I think [this match] could be similar to the Palace game, but hopefully the result will be different".

The Spaniard said: 'I said 38 a long time ago, but Cardiff won a couple of games and that changed everything and now, obviously, it's even more important for us to win another game and be sure that everything is fine and we can start thinking about how high we can go in the table.

"We need a team that can compete in the Premier League and not just survive in the Premier League".

"I am not saying anything special or unusual".

"It is just a case of saying, 'What is our idea?" My staff, they are young people and we are always thinking about how to improve things.

The Champions League victor wants a team capable of competing for trophies and European football - and to do that he needs a stronger hand in the transfer market.

"Always, I say, because I have come from the Real Madrid Academy, we have a winning mentality".

"But it has to be something that makes sure I, the fans and everybody here, are sure we can compete".

"It's not a case of thinking, "maybe we can finish 10th or maybe we can finish 17th".
