Real Madrid are set to pull back in their search for a striker during the January transfer window despite showing an interest in both Mauro Icardi and Krzysztof Piatek.

The 23-year-old, who has been linked with a host of clubs this season, has netted 19 times in 21 games for Genoa in the current campaign.

The Poland global - dubbed the "next Robert Lewandowski" - has scored 19 goals in 21 appearances this season, with only Ronaldo outscoring him in the Italian top flight.

Florentino Perez is on the verge of splurging over 50 million for the next Galactico at Real Madrid - Genoa's Krzysztof Piatek.

Aside from Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Borussia of Dortmund are also intent on trying to sign Piatek before the winter market close, according to reports by Spanish radio programme SER Deportivos.

They have struggled for goals this season, with 28 strikes in 19 league fixtures, and the need for a striker has become even more pressing after Karim Benzema fractured a finger.

According to AS, conversations have taken place between Real and Piatek's representatives, although no formal offer has yet been made. The Serie A club have set a price tag of over 50 million for the Polish striker - a figure they deem appropriate for a player who scored 19 goals in his first 20 games in Italy, and is now Serie A's second highest goal scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo with 13 goals.

Genoa are reported to want to hold on to Piatek until the summer, but that a huge offer of around £45m would force them to sell.
