Absolutely Fabulous star Dame June Whitfield has died

The actress was best known for her comic roles in sitcoms Terry and June and Absolutely Fabulous.

Actress Dame June Whitfield has died at the age of 93, her agent has said.

Tributes to the star poured in from the world of British comedy.

Aged 92, she was appointed a dame at Buckingham Palace. I cried then too'.

At 89, Whitfield appeared in television soap EastEnders as Sister Ruth, a nun with a secret.

Name anyone in the business, and she worked with them: Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Jimmy Edwards, Frankie Howerd, Dick Emery, Julian Clary - even the cast of Friends.

Tributes to her long and successful career in comedy are being made on social media.

She also appeared in Carry On films and featured in the USA sitcom Friends.

She later became a popular TV double-act with Terry Scott on Happy Ever After (1974) and Terry and June (1979).

Dame June was married to husband Tim Aitchison for 45 years until his death in 2001. I don't live in fear of not getting parts. Very English, and nothing wrong with that'.

The pair played mother and daughter in Absolutely Fabulous for five series of the hit sitcom, as well as in the 2016 film.

Julia Sawalha, who played her strait-laced granddaughter Saffy, said: 'Thank you Dame June Whitfield for teaching me my craft with such grace and dignity'.

At the time of receiving her damehood, Whitfield revealed that in a previous encounter with Queen Elizabeth she discovered the head of the Commonwealth was a fan of one of her earliest radio roles, Eth in BBC Radio's Take it from Here.
