Walgreens teaming up with FedEx for new prescription delivery service

Not to be outdone, now Walgreens has struck a similar partnership for its prescription delivery service, announcing on Thursday that it has partnered with FedEx to deliver drugs to patients next-day.

The new next-day service is called Walgreens Express, and users will be charged a fee of $4.99 to get their drugs delivered to their door the day after they order them, though this only applies to orders placed by 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The companies say their delivery services are faster options than mail-order prescription programs that have been around for years. Same-day delivery is now available in select markets and will be expanded in 2019.

The delivery service is part of Walgreens Express, which also lets customers preview the cost of their prescriptions and prepay for those that are eligible.

"Our goal is to make filling prescriptions as fast and easy as possible for patients". Patients who prefer collecting prescriptions at their local Walgreens can enter a dedicated Walgreens Express pickup checkout line to receive their prescriptions. "Just as FedEx package pick-up and drop-off services at Walgreens locations provide customers with much-needed convenience, the ability to ship prescription medication directly from Walgreens to their homes offers valuable flexibility to best meet individual needs and schedules". At the start, the service will be available at 7,100 of Walgreens' 9,560 pharmacies.

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. shares were trading at $82.07 per share on Thursday afternoon, down $0.75 (-0.91%). (NASDAQ: WBA), the first global pharmacy-led, health and wellbeing enterprise.

Walgreens is joining rival drugstore chain CVS Health in expanding home deliveries for prescriptions nationwide, as stores continue adjusting to a retail world made more consumer-friendly by online competition.

A text alert system sends notifications for prescriptions ready for pickup, and a mobile device process enables patients to have the prescriptions delivered the next day.

Terms were not disclosed on the deal for PillPack, an online pharmacy which operates in all 50 U.S. states and offers pre-sorted dose packaging and home delivery. For more details, talk to a Walgreens pharmacist. Right now, same day delivery is only available in Dallas, Chicago, New York City, Gainesville, Miami, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale.

Extended hour pharmacies are those open 14 hours or more daily.
