"I don't know if it's nothing or something serious", Guardiola said of De Bruyne, who suffered a knee ligament injury in training in August.

I don't know right now.

Manchester City have been dealt a huge setback with Kevin De Bruyne fearful he will be out for at least a month with a knee injury that will force him out of next week's Manchester derby.

But it took nearly half of the first half for that dominance to yield a goal, and when it came it was a scruffy one, Aleksandar Mitrovic deflecting home Brahim Diaz's shot after Oleksandr Zinchenko's cross had hit Vincent Kompany. "He spent a lot of time injured but made a huge effort in Donetsk against Shakhtar and played a few minutes against Spurs in a hard situation because of the pitch and the physicality".

"Today he was involved in offense and defence, hopefully what happened in the last minute is not serious".

The night belonged to City's youngsters, and particularly Diaz who has been linked with a move away from the club at the end of the season.

"He knows we want him, but after that it's down to his agent and himself".

"We want him. In the end it won't depend on us, it is them". We want to protect them, help them. that goes for him all of the players in the academy. The opinion of us is so high.

City must wait to find out their quarter-final opponents after Leicester's game with Southampton on Tuesday was postponed following the death of the club's owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium on October 27.

Diaz was one of those who came in, while De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus also featured against Premier League strugglers Fulham.

"It is a really important game for both teams", manager Slavisa Jokanovic said.

Any doubts about whether or not Foden and Diaz are ready for Premier League football were surely dispelled by their respective performances on Thursday, as they played vital roles, and stylishly so.

Diaz doubled his tally just after the hour and City subsequently eased to victory, but De Bruyne's late withdrawal may give Guardiola some cause for concern.
