Leno, 26, was one of Emery's first signings after arriving this summer, bringing the goalkeeper in for a reported £19m. The Gunners know that winning the Europa League could be one of their more realistic chances of making the UEFA Champions League next season.

Unai Emery's first European game as Arsenal boss will be against Ukrainian minnows Vorskla Poltava at the Emirates Stadium. Leno has a reputation of being the better goalkeeper with his feet, but Emery insisted it's the quality of Cech's performances that has been keeping the German on the bench.

He came in for criticism for wayward passes when Arsenal began the season with back-to-back defeats under Emery, who prefers his sides to play out from the back.

Emile Smith-Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Julio Pleguezuelo also trained with the first team this afternoon so they could be involved in the squad on Thursday night as Emery looks to make sweeping changes to his team.

Bernd Leno should make his Gunners debut in place of Petr Cech, while Lucas Torreira, Danny Welbeck, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Mohamed Elneny are all in line for starts.

Arsenal supporters were expecting Leno to replace Cech immediately after Emery signed the stopper in a £19million deal from Bayer Leverkusen. 'He is going to start and he can go a long way here in Arsenal. "I think Petr [Cech]'s performance is good and with Leno we signed him for now and to improve with us".

But Emery would not label Leno his "cup goalkeeper" and said he will not assign either of his options to a particular competition.

'Bernd Leno is going to play in the starting XI, ' Emery said ahead of the clash with Vorskla.

"We are going to continue looking and testing every match", said Emery, whose side return to Premier League action against Everton on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.
