The typhoon was occurring as tropical weather also was devastating the southern U.S. Florence has dumped historical levels of rain on North Carolina.

The typhoon produced a record storm surge of 3.38m in Hong Kong, the highest since records began in 1904.

Typhoon Mangkhut smashes windows of a commercial building in Hung Hom, Kowloon, in Hong Kong.

Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall Sunday in mainland China, but not before deadly 100-plus miles per hour winds blew through the Philippines and Hong Kong.

Mangkhut swept across the northern Philippines island of Luzon on Saturday, causing a huge landslide in two mining villages near the mountain town of Itogon.

Typhoon Mangkhut has displaced many in various Asian countries.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific said all of its flights would be canceled between 2:30 a.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday.

All flights were canceled at Guangzhou and Shenzhen airports but operations were due to resume on Monday.

"Mangkhut left more than 600 sections of road blocked by trees and other debris, and at the height of the storm, cranes toppled, scaffolding collapsed and skyscrapers swayed in the wind", NPR's Rob Schmitz reports from Hong Kong.

There were 1,500 reports of fallen trees, 600 obstacles blocking roads and 400 to 500 cases of broken or collapsed windows and furnishings, Mr Lee said.

Authorities in Hong Kong issued a signal 10 - the strongest possible storm warning - as the storm hit the busy financial centre.

Mangkhut's northwesterly track will bring heavy rain and winds to the autonomous region of Guangxi early on Monday, before it weakens into a tropical depression to reach southwestern Yunnan next day.

Today, Mangkhut was still affecting southern China's coast and the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan, and rain and strong winds were expected to continue through Tuesday.

Videos and images coming in from Hong Kong and nearby Shenzhen, China, show how destructive the storm is.

At least 391 people were injured by falling debris as winds whipped through the city, slicing through hundreds of trees and causing deep flooding in low-lying areas such as Hang Fa Chuen and Siu Sai Wan, which were badly hit by Typhoon Hato past year. For the first time, 42 casinos on the gambling hotspot of Macau were closed "for the safety of casino employees, visitors to the city and residents", according to a government statement. About 63,000 people have been affected, and the damage has not yet been fully assessed as numerous worst-hit areas are rural. At least 64 died in landslides or by drowning, the Associated Press reported, citing Philippine National Police officials.

Guangdong is also China's most populous province, with a population of more than 100 million. "We have lost hope", 40-year-old Mary Anne Baril, whose corn and rice crops were spoilt, told AFP.

People in China and the Philippines are struggling to pick up the pieces as the typhoon left a trail of death and destruction. Authorities and residents say they had learned from that experience, and that residents were quicker and more willing to evacuate to shelters.

It has been compared in ferocity to super Typhoon Haiyan which killed more than 7,000 people in 2013.
