In a match with prodigious momentum shifts, a battle of two fast-rising, big-hitting future stars, Naomi Osaka of Japan, the 19 seed, defeated Aryna Sabalenka to advance to her first career quarterfinal at a major.

The 20-year-old did not drop a set in her first three matches - including an impressive stretch where she won 22 straight games across her second and third rounds - and won three 6-0 sets. Osaka, who won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, is guaranteed to meet an unseeded player for the chance to move on to the US Open semifinal. "I don't want to stay in the negative past today or tomorrow, only", she said, caveating with bright eyes.

" I'm just real glad I was able to win in the end."

Both players came into the match on the back of gruelling three-set contests but Osaka began confidently in their first tour-level meeting and never looked likely to lose against her worn out opponent on another day of stifling heat in NY.

"I felt like I had a lot of chances to break her in the third set, then she would serve these really fantastic serves".

Osaka and Sabalenka both showed off the firepower that has catapulted them up the rankings.

Since then, the Japanese No. 1 has been candid in her adjustment to superstar status, but she's rounded into form at this US Open.
