That surprised some fans.

After last season's carousel at the position in which three players - Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Lynch - started, the Broncos signed Case Keenum during the offseason. However, the latest waiver wire claim could spell the end of a former first round draft pick.

The Broncos released quarterback Paxton Lynch shortly after acquiring former Redskins quarterback Kevin Hogan off waivers on Sunday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Lynch is the latest draft pick to be released by John Elway after the Broncos cut almost half of their 2017 draft class on Saturday.

There is absolutely no way the Denver Broncos are going to have four quarterbacks on the active roster.

Hogan's arrival, though, led the Broncos to part ways with Lynch.

While this is a surprising move, it is clear as day that it was possible it would happen. But Lynch was unable to secure the Broncos' No. 2 spot, and was supplanted by rookie Chad Kelly for the role following the preseason opener.

The Broncos traded up to draft him with the 26th pick in the 2016 draft, but Lynch never found his footing as the franchise quarterback the Broncos hoped he would be.

The move comes one day after the Broncos chose to keep Lynch on their 53 man roster on Saturday.

The Broncos will make a corresponding move in the coming hours, but this move spells Kevin Hogan as the third quarterback, it appears.
