From Kiev in the middle of the second set, refused to continue the fight. Konta, 27, had earlier beaten two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in a match that was halted by rain on Wednesday.

In the second round of "Rogers Cup" Elina tried to take revenge from Michaela buzarnescu the recent defeat at Roland Garros and Birmingham.

Konta was 6-3 3-0 ahead when play was suspended until 11am (4pm BST) on Thursday, raising the prospect of a third round clash with world number five Elina Svitolina the same day if Azarenka yields.

Australian 15th seed Ashleigh Barty also made the quarter-finals by seeing off Alize Cornet of France 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 and now faces former Kiki Bertens who ended former Wimbledon victor Petra Kvitova's hopes with a straightforward 6-3 6-2 win. Svitolina had reached the third round when her Romanian opponent Mihaela Buzarnescu retired from their match on Tuesday with the score 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 4-3.

The Ukranian needed just one break of serve to seal the first set, and surrendered just three points on her first serve.
