He did indicate, however, the baby was possibly buried somewhere in the mountains, authorities said.

That night, deputies received calls reporting a man who was acting strangely in the Lolo Hot Springs area. When law enforcement arrived, they learned the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Francis Carlton Crowley, had left the scene and a 5-month-old child left in his care had not been seen for several hours.

Deputies apprehended Crowley after he was found to have returned to the area. Deputies then arrested Crowley who Bassett said appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was not making sense to officers.

After combing the mountains for more than six hours on foot, one deputy "heard the faint cry of a baby", according to the sheriff's office.

A Montana man was arrested after a 5-month-old baby was found buried under a pile of sticks in the woods.

The five-month-old baby who was abandoned Saturday in a remote area near Lolo Hot Springs is said to be in good condition at a Missoula hospital.

A Missoula County Sheriff's spokesman said: 'For all of us at the sheriffs office, this is what we call a miracle.

Deputies and officers from United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Montana Highway Patrol quickly formed a search party and were dispatched to try and find the child.

Searchers followed the sound and found the infant alive, buried facedown beneath a pile of sticks and debris.

'For all of us at the sheriffs [sic] office, this is what we call a miracle, ' the sheriff's office wrote in the press release. "Clothed in only a wet and soiled onesie, the baby was found at approximately 2:30 am, putting the infant in the woods unattended and in the cold (approximately 46 degrees) for a minimum of 9 hours", the statement on Facebook said. The baby boy is reportedly in good condition following Sunday's ordeal. Additional charges were expected. "For the officers who were present for this event, [it's] especially hard knowing what this small baby endured in the last 24 hours".

Crowley has now been charged with criminal endangerment. It is unclear if at this point if he has a lawyer.

There remain unanswered questions about this case, such as who left the baby in Crowley's care and if they have given any statement to the police.
