Authorities in Virginia say at least one person was killed in a residential structure after a helicopter crashed into it.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is investigating the crash, confirmed the pilot was the only person in the helicopter when it went down.

Bristol Commons is near the campus of The College of William & Mary and is located across Ironbound Road from Dillard Field.

Virginia State Police said they responded to the crash in the Bristol Commons condominium complex just before 5 p.m.

"We can not get into the building, because there is still fire inside the building", Anaya said.

Officials say firefighters worked through the night to put out the fire and hot spots in the building.

Jean Lonchak Danylko was killed when the aircraft hit her home around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, state police said in a statement Monday.

The US Navy confirmed the accident did not involve any of its aircraft.

That witness suspected that authorities may have known the helicopter was in distress prior since he estimated crews arrived "30 seconds" after the crash.

A spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Peggy Weiss, who lives in the neighborhood, told the Daily Press she saw a small, rickety helicopter crash between two buildings.

Burns called damage to the complex is "incredibly extensive".
