Moving to America and MLS fulfills another career ambition for me.

Rooney will beging training with his new club this week but can not officially join until the MLS transfer window opens on July 10.

It has been said that as part of the negotiations between Everton and DC United, there is an agreement in place for Rooney to return to Goodison after his two years in the league, to become a coach at the club.

Rooney has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract and will complete the formalities of his move when the MLS transfer window opens on July 10.

The former England captain posted a photograph on Twitter of him giving the thumbs-up while apparently sitting on an airplane and bound for the United States. I have the hunger to be a success here and will give D.C. 100 percent-as I have always done for every team I have ever played for.

Rooney is understood to have secured a visa and work permit and could begin training with his new team-mates by the end of the week. "We are beyond excited to add someone of Rooney's calibre".

"I think it's the right move for him", Beckham said.

"From everyone at Everton, we thank Wayne for his service to the club and wish him every success in the next three-and-a-half years with DC United".

While terms of the deal were not released, reports claim that the striker has signed a deal that will run through the 2020 season and will net him around $13 million (£10m), which would make him the highest paid player in team history and one of the top earners in MLS. He went on to score 253 goals in 559 appearances at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League title five times.

And Carl Robinson's Whitecaps could be staring down England's leading goal scorer when they help DC christen Audi Field. Rooney's 53 goals and 119 games lead England in global play.
