Apple takes swipe at Facebook with new data privacy tools

Apple did not officially announce an iOS 12 release date, but given the software usually launches around the time of new iPhone models in September, you can probably expect it then.

The new features come as Apple looks to include new features to help iPhone owners use their phones a lot less and to monitor screen time.

The activity report can be sent to a parent's iPhone.

The new macOS, along with iOS 12, will roll out this fall, and a beta edition for developers is coming this week as part of WWDC. And if you want to watch it, there are several options. These include new "competitions" within the Activity app, letting you challenge buddies to fitness duels and earn badges.

Last year, Apple added "intelligent tracking prevention" that imposes time limits on tracking cookies and takes other measures to try to prevent advertising tech companies from following users around the web.

"IOS 12 is created to make your iPhone and iPad experience even faster, more responsive, and more delightful", Apple boasts. Apple is adding new animals (and a ghost) to the Animoji feature, which is only available to iPhone X users. On the contrary, Apple is seemingly doing more to make sure its entire user base has a better experience with its devices.

When you ring a bunch of people, they can all drop in and out as they like. They're also more personalized since they now take into consideration more of your facial movements including your tongue. Thanks to face recognition, the sharing suggestion would be to people who are actually in the photos. App launch is up to 40% faster and up to 2x faster under load, according to Apple's statistics. Skin tone, hairstyle, outfits, accessories, and more can all be switched up from your phone.

FaceTime also gets an upgrade, adding the ability to have a group video chats with up to 32 friends. Building on iOS 11, the upcoming version of the OS features on performance, stability and the digital health of its users by offering tools that will help cut down the amount of time you spend on your iPhone or iPad.

Group FaceTime calls are also being introduced with iOS 12. With Measure, you can measure objects or walls around you thanks to some new augmented reality tools from Apple.

In a direct swipe at Facebook, Federighi explained how "like buttons and share buttons" and comment features can "be used to track you whether you click on them or not". The Apple Podcast app is also coming to the Apple Watch.

To more cheers from developers, Apple also announced a redesigned Mac App Store for the Mojave update, expanding a new look the company introduced to iPhones and iPads a year ago.

A few other questions linger over WWDC this year: Can Apple make augmented reality useful for more than cool demos? A new Discover tab has an emphasis on curation, with Apple-produced editorial content shining a light on new and interesting apps. The concept is near-identical to the one seen on a multitude of third-party apps already available on the App Store - such as Ruler and AirMeasure, for example - most of which you probably won't need anymore. The automations are performed via a block-arrangement interface, which allows you to mix and match trigger actions with outputs for different results.
