Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released the official trailer for Death of Superman, part one of a two-part Death and Return of Superman film cycle set to debut later this year. Animation brings the monster from Krypton's prehistory to present-day Earth, where it leaves the members of the Justice League - Wonder Woman, Batman and The Flash, among them - wounded or near-death. There was the 1994 video game The Death and Return of Superman, the 2007 Superman/Doomsday animated movie that launched the DC Universe Original Animated Movies line, and, of course, the live-action inclusion in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

I mean, this looks fine and everything, but the biggest question I have is: why? I'm totally baffled by the decision to make this. This seems like a huge step backward, both visually and creatively; it nearly feels as if DC is doing this because they think they have to instead of because they want to.

Death of Superman will star Jerry O'Connell, Rebecca Romijn, Rainn Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Nathan Fillion, Christopher Gorham, Shemar Moore and Jason O'Mara. When Doomsday is released from this ancient prison and carves a bloody swath across the world, Superman becomes the world's only hope for survival and he must fight the notorious villain to stop his onslaught! To put the Man of Steel six feet under, DC introduced a new villain, Doomsday, who went on a almost unstoppable rampage on his way to Metropolis.
