The film follows Laura (Cruz) on her travels from Argentina to her small home town in Spain for her sister's wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion.

She explained, according to Variety, "We don't take the characters home at the end of the day. That allows me to jump from reality to fiction".

Farhadi, an Academy-Award victor for The Salesman and A Separation, wrote and directed the Spanish-language psychological thriller, which follows Laura (Cruz) on her travels from Argentina to her small home town in Spain for her sister's wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion.

The kidnappers threaten to kill Irene if the police are informed, so the distraught Laura relies on her family and friends for help, with old flame Paco (Javier Bardem) leading the chase. "King Lear" helped inspired the story for its themes about fathers and daughters. "Because he doesn't sleep so much, he was memorizing all our dialogue. He's involved in every single thing".

Focus Features acquires and produces specialty films for the global market, and holds a library of iconic movies from fearless filmmakers.

After the press conference ended, Farhadi asked to take the microphone back.

Farhadi is one of two Iranian directors this year whose films have been chosen to compete for the Palme d'Or, Cannes' highest accolade.

Farhadi added: 'It's a very unusual feeling for me to be able to be here whereas he can not be here. "I have great respect for his work". I think there's still time.

Pahani's arrest was loosened from a six year jail term to the decision to limit his movement within Iran and to ban him from making any further movies however in the last seven years Pahani has made four films.

'What's important for him is not to be able to catch a flight, but for him to be able to see how spectators view his film.

"It's a very unusual feeling for me to be able to be here whereas he can not be here", Farhadi added.

'This is something I have difficulty living with. "It's wonderful that he's continued to work in the face of such adversity".
