Top Sri Lankan officials arrested over bribery charges

President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered suspension of a senior official of the Presidential Secretariat and a Chairman of a State corporation on the charges of alleged bribery.

President's Chief of Staff and State Timber Corporation Chairman were arrested by Bribery Commission officers yesterday evening while accepting a bribe of 20 million rupees from an Indian businessman.

The two were arrested at a auto park of a luxury hotel in Colombo while they were accepting a 20-million-rupee (about 120,000 USA dollar) bribe from an investor who was keen to acquire a state-owned sugar factory.

The duo had been arrested in the vehicle park of a five star hotel in Colombo while accepting 20 million rupees as an advance payment.

The duo has allegedly demanded a 560 million rupee bribe which had been negotiated down to 100 million.

The suspects, Dr Mahanama, served as Secretary to the Ministry of Lands and Parliamentary Reforms earlier while the second suspect, P. Dissanayake, is one time Secretary to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Officials of the Bribery Commission said the suspects would be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate after their statements were recorded.
