Cannes film festival to set up sexual harassment phone line

The French equality minister Marlene Schiappa said movers and shakers would be warned about their behavior when they arrive at the world's biggest film festival on the French Riviera.

A decades-long quest by filmmaker Terry Gilliam to make a film based on the epic novel "Don Quixote" has hit a legal hurdle, just weeks before it is due to screen at the Cannes Film Festival. The telephone hotline is for victims or witnesses to report aggressors.

Disgraced American producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of attacking four actresses earlier at Cannes, before the #MeToo movement started. However, Weinstein has been accused of a number of instances of inappropriate behaviour at the festival, including by actors Alice Evans and Judith Godrèche.

She vowed all measures - including the helpline - are in place to protect all women in the film industry. "Grey Goose has created a unique platform of celebration to toast the game changing films at Cannes this year and I'm thrilled to partner with this global icon of luxury in the country of its origin", she added.

Interestingly, the Cannes has for the first time appointed a woman, in the form of Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett, to head the jury at the festival.

"The question of a quota in no case concerns the artistic selection of a festival".

The move comes after Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux said that the film festival would review its practices after the Weinstein stories came to light.
