The 2018 Grand National is in the books, with Tiger Roll winning the race in dramatic fashion. With a photo finish win, it is certain that this edition of the race will go down in history. And, because of that, it is worth asking if the 2018 Grand National was the best Grand National race in the history of the event. At the very least, there are some reasons to believe that it was.

Perhaps the top reason that this year's Grand National is the best of all time is the fact that it was also one of the richest. The fact that there was a prize pool of over a million pounds set the tone for the entire event. With so much money on the line, the intensity for the jockeys and teams involved was substantial.

Usually, the stakes of horse racing are only considered from the point of view of bettors. But horse racing can be a high stakes sport for the trainers, jockeys, and other key figures as well. The finishing position of each of those individuals can greatly impact the payday that all of them receive. Finishing in first place obviously leads to a greater prize won, which means more money for everyone involved. Success at the betting window is important but the financial jockeying at the top for each race team is even bigger.

With that in mind, the fact that the race came down to a photo finish is even more incredible than a regular race coming down to the same. Over half a million pounds go to the winner of the Grand National, making up roughly half of the prize money awarded for the race. The fact that Tiger Roll was able to earn that amount by the smallest of margins is something that will be remembered forever.

The dramatic conclusion to the 2018 Grand National evoked memories of the 2012 race at Aintree, which also came down to a photo finish. In that race, it was Neptune Collonges who was able to earn the top spot by a nose over Sunnyhillboy. Photo finishes can be rare, so getting two of them to decide the Grand National within this decade is incredible.

There are a ton of different ways to analyze horse racing, including Aintree horse racing tips from Oddschecker. But not even the most thorough of racing analysts could have predicted that one of the biggest races in the world would have ended in a photo finish.

Thanks to the increase in intensity brought on by the photo decision and the fact that spectators had to wait to see who the winner was, there is no arguing that the 2018 Grand National can be considered one of the best ever. Whether or not it belongs in that top spot is a matter of opinion from there.
