Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Monday killed a policeman and kidnapped a German engineer working with Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company, Mr Michael Cremza in Kano, Daily Trust has learnt.

He explained that "an armed gang of five men in a Motor vehicle ambushed and opened fire on a motor vehicle conveying the staff Dantata & Sawoe, Vanguard reports".

He identified the officer killed as a police sergeant and confirmed the name of the slain German.

He said police have launched a manhunt for the kidnappers and an operation to rescue Cremza, calling on the public to volunteer information anytime they notice odd movements in their communities.

The German Foreign Ministry in Berlin had no immediate comment.

But in recent years the phenomenon has spread to the north, where criminals hit by a government crackdown on cattle rustling, have increasingly taken up the practice.

Recall that in January, two Americans and two Canadians were kidnapped in an ambush that killed two of their police escorts in the northern state of Kaduna.

Abductees are often released after a few days, once a ransom has been paid.

Ten of Nigeria's 36 states apply the death penalty to abductors.
