Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce 10 electrified models to its lineup by 2022, and has even created the new EQ division to help bring those new vehicles to market.

According to the Bloomberg website, the new EQ S, now in development, should be ready to go by 2020, and it will represent the German company's direct attack on the Model S from Tesla.

Mercedes-Benz now offers a number of hybrid options across its range - such as on the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class - while its stablemate brand Smart offers all-electric variants of the ForTwo and ForFour city cars. Certainly the opportunity to create a whole new design signature is there. The EQ brand will be strengthened by hybrid plug-in models and will have a range of unique battery offerings.

He said: "We have announced that we will have electrical vehicles in each and every platform in the future".

As the best-selling luxury-car maker in the world, Mercedes had recorded-breaking profit and deliveries in 2017 defending its top spot in the global auto market against the namesake brand of BMW AG and Audi marque from Volkswagen AG. "We have to increase flexibility in local production as the world, in general, has become more volatile", Zetsche said.

Dieter Zetsche, CEO, Daimler AG however refused to comment on the potential risks of trade barriers and said it is too early to talk about such barriers. But of course, it's better to have more instead of fewer options. Zetsche reiterated that "possible cooperation projects don't necessarily have to be restricted to China, but Daimler's ties with Renault SA, Nissan Motor Co. and BMW might limit global opportunities".

Electrified variants of the new Mercedes A-Class are in the pipeline, according to one of the chief developers of the vehicle. "We would, of course, welcome additional opportunities", said Zetsche.

Daimler is open to exploring ways to cooperate with the company's new largest shareholder, Li Shufu, as long as the interests of the company's already existing Chinese joint-venture partner BAIC Motor Corp. are safeguarded.

Mercedes sees potential for a "significant lift in volumes" as it expands its lineup of compact cars to eight from five now, Zetsche said. With affordable models like the CLA coupe and GLA compact crossover, Mercedes has been able to lure young buyers from competitors and expects to continue doing so with a revamped A-Class hatchback.
